Our School Bees
In Summer 2025, we were fortunate to win a competition – the prize being a colony of bees and all related equipment. Our bees arrived by Royal Mail!

With the very grateful help of Wharfedale Beekeepers Association, we have been busy learning how to look after our bees.
We are proud to keep bees as part of our commitment to outdoor learning, environmental education and sustainability. Bees play a vital role in our ecosystem by pollinating plants, crops and wildflowers, helping to support biodiversity and food production.
Our school beehives provide our Year 5 pupils with a unique opportunity to learn about the importance of pollinators and develop a deeper understanding of the natural world. Through carefully planned activities and observations, children gain first-hand experience of how bees live, work together and contribute to the environment.
How Our Bees Support the National Curriculum
Science
Our bees provide exciting opportunities for pupils to:
- Learn about living things and their habitats
- Explore life cycles and reproduction in animals
- Understand adaptation and survival
- Investigate ecosystems, food chains and biodiversity
- Develop scientific enquiry skills through observation and research
Geography
Children learn about:
- The role of bees within local and global environments
- Human impact on habitats and wildlife
- Sustainability and environmental conservation
- How climate and seasonal changes affect living things
Design and Technology
Pupils can:
- Explore how beehives are designed and constructed
- Learn about tools, materials and practical problem-solving
- Consider how technology supports sustainable food production
Mathematics
The study of bees provides real-life opportunities to:
- Collect and analyse data
- Measure and compare quantities
- Explore patterns, symmetry and shape found in nature
Art and Design
The hives and surrounding wildlife inspire:
- Observational drawing and painting
- Photography and creative projects
- Exploration of colour, pattern and texture
Personal Development and Citizenship
Through learning about bees, pupils develop:
- Respect for nature and the environment
- An understanding of sustainability and conservation
- Responsibility and teamwork
- An appreciation of how individual actions can positively impact the wider world
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Our bees help bring learning to life by providing meaningful, hands-on experiences that connect classroom learning with the natural environment. They encourage curiosity, inspire future scientists and environmentalists, and help pupils understand the important role they can play in protecting our planet.
By caring for and learning about bees, our pupils develop a lifelong appreciation of wildlife, biodiversity and environmental stewardship.
